Bankruptcy
If all other solutions are impractical, you can pay a fee (around £500) and petition your local court to go bankrupt. Once you have been declared bankrupt, the court will appoint the Official Receiver (OR) to your case. The OR will make a similar calculation to that explained in debt management plans and set a period of time over which that payment must be made each month. This varies but is typically three years. Once this period is concluded, the debts are written off. Bankruptcy will have profound effects on your credit rating, will disqualify you from running a business and will preclude you from pursuing certain careers.
